Sentence Structure 41
Interrogative Word “哪里”

Here we pay special attention to the word 哪里 used as an interrogative.

It means "where".

Example

Question: 哪里

Answer: 东京

The meaning of: 请问,您哪位?

This is another polite way to ask about the identity of a stranger who has started to speak to us, or call us.

Like what we said about "", the meaning is "Who are you?" and the answer should be the name or social status.

Exercise

Invent whatever sort of association between the following countries and the Chinese characters they are composed by:

Nigeria

Cuba

Iraq

Kenya

How to proceed:

First, read all the meanings of each character (as listed in the "Characters' Details" section).

Then, use your creative fantasy to "animate" each character: does it look like an animal, a piece of cloth, an object? What about the parts it is composed of? Is there a mouth, a woman, a man, a hand? Does it contain other characters?

Last, associate what you have found to the country, to the country location, to its population, to its shape or to whatever you want!

The purpose of this exercise is to help you memorize more Chinese characters.
